"Strengthening family and community voices in education and wellbeing"

Parent and Family Engagement Project - Tennant Creek & Barkly

About the Project

Remote Indigenous Parents Australia (RIPA) is working in partnership with Tracks Integrated Services to deliver the Parent and Family Engagement Project in Tennant Creek and the Barkly region.

This project is funded through the Indigenous Advancement Strategy (IAS), supported by the National Indigenous Australians Agency (NIAA). Its aim is to strengthen the role of families, Elders, and the community in supporting young people’s education and wellbeing.

We are focused on listening first and working together to ensure the approach is community-led and grounded in local voices and cultural knowledge.

Why We’re Here

Families, Elders, and local organisations play a vital role in shaping the future for young people. Through this project, we want to:

  • Support families and carers to participate confidently in education

  • Build stronger partnerships between families, schools, and service providers

  • Empower the community to have a voice in local decision-making

  • Work together to improve school engagement and create better opportunities for young people

Earlier this year, RIPA Directors spent several days in Tennant Creek, listening to families, community leaders, schools, and organisations. That visit confirmed the importance of ensuring this work is guided by the community, for the community.

What’s Happening Next

We’ll be back in Tennant Creek and the Barkly region during Term 4, 2026 (dates to be confirmed) to continue working with families, Elders, schools, and service providers.

Together, we’ll be:

  • Hosting yarning sessions and community workshops

  • Developing a locally designed immersion experience

  • Sharing information and creating opportunities for families and organisations to participate

  • Building long-term partnerships to strengthen support for young people
